"You should take some time off, Sir. You deserve it."
Faithful Braca had looked at me so earnestly that the automatic denial died on my lips. Of course Peacekeepers take regulars breaks, it's good for morale and efficiency, but I always considered myself above such… frailties.
Total dedication to my goals is as natural to me as breathing.
And yet… Braca's words seemed to wake an unfulfilled need inside me, so I gave in to the sudden impulse - something I never do - and left aboard a Marauder, handing the carrier over to my capable Captain.
I realized soon that it had been a mistake: relax bores me to death.
I need - I crave - things to do, plans to set in motion, people to torment. What would otherwise be my purpose in life?
The planet where I landed my Marauder was pleasant enough: mild temperatures perfect for my physiology, an acceptable level of technology, friendly inhabitants. The wide beaches of this world reminded me of scenes gleaned from Crichton's memories, so I decided to try out some of the scenarios the Human held so dear.
But lounging under trees swaying in the breeze made me antsy, the sound of beating waves disturbed my concentration and the little umbrellas that came with the drinks always left obnoxious slivers between my teeth. Not to mention that there was not a colorful shirt to be found on the whole planet…
After a few solar days I felt like a reactor reaching critical mass, and decided to forget all about this "time off" dren and go back to my usual routine. Just the act of collecting my belongings and running a pre-flight check on the Marauder made me feel better.
"Leaving so soon?" The voice coming through the open airlock door sounded familiar.
I reached the portal, and she was there, in all her glorious, cerulean-hued beauty. The talons on her head waved gently, as if in greeting.
"Natira, my dear! What a surprise!" Indeed it was: I thought she was dead.
"Yes, dear Scorpius, I am very much alive!" Was she reading my mind? "Unless you want to… correct the situation." Her mischievous smile was as evil as I remembered. What a woman!
"I might." I smiled back, flooded by fond memories of our times together. "But not right now…"
"Fun first, right? Like old times?" Natira actually purred in pleased expectation.
And why not? I thought. Maybe, just maybe, this… vacation could turn out to be what I really needed.
"Yes, like old times. We can think about… retribution later!"
"Much later!" She said with a throaty laugh, then slipped her arm through mine and we started walking away from the Marauder.
The sunset tinged the skies with a blood-red light. It looked like an omen of wonderful things to come.

Date: 2011-07-08 08:07 am (UTC)PS. There is a new Torchwood this weekend. Yeah, after "Children of Earth" it would be hard to fulfill expectations but the plot seems really intriguing.
PS. I'm not saying anything. But if I were to say something I could mention that maybe there would be something around next week (if fate doesn't mess up) you would find... interesting :) Keep your fingers crossed! :)))
